Ebony box lined with cherry

Ebony and cherry box
Box, about 1904-12
Designed by Ernest Gimson and made in his Daneway workshop.

Macassar ebony lined with cherry and inlaid with silver and ivory.
34.5 x 48.1 x 25.2cm

The ebony surfaces of the box have been dished with shallow circles to take the inlaid decoration – a simplified pattern of flowers and leaves. The stems are formed from strips of silver; the flowers and leaves are cut from ivory. Wood, silver and ivory are all hard-edged materials and Gimson’s precise design was chosen to suit that characteristic.
The box sits on chamfered bracket feet.

Purchased from Gimson’s executors in 1919
