Walnut cabinet with inlay

Walnut box with inlay
Small cabinet, about 1904-12
Designed by Ernest Gimson and made in his Daneway workshop.

Walnut, the exterior inlaid with ebony and ivory.
25 x 46 x 23.2cm

This rectangular cabinet sits on lightly chamfered feet. The decorative inlay covers the entire surface in the manner of the Persian and Indian chests and boxes which Gimson admired. The inlay has been left proud from the surface of the cabinet enhancing the rich texture of the piece. The doors open to reveal two sets of three drawers with ash fronts and brass handles.

Small decorative pieces like F1 and F2 were often made for exhibitions as well as for commissions. They were eye-catching and potential spur of the moment purchases. They were used to store stationery and notepaper, gloves, handkerchiefs, ties, or jewellery. At Gimson’s Debenham & Freebody's exhibition in 1907 an ebony box inlaid with ivory and palm was on sale for £4.10.0.

Purchased from Gimson’s executors in 1919
