Pair of firedogs, about 1904-19
Designed by Ernest Gimson and probably made by Alfred Bucknell at the Sapperton smithy
Brass and steel
H. 70cm
Firedogs of this design were owned by Lord Bathurst and were exhibited at Debenham & Freebody's 1907 no 60. These were inspired by a seventeenth-century pair at Haddon Hall, Derbyshire which Gimson drew as a student but are very much his own design. Another Arts and Crafts designer, Edward Spencer, designed firedogs that were much closer to the Haddon Hall examples for the Artificers' Guild.
Purchased from Gimson's executors, 1919
