Silver matchbox 921.1975

921.1975

Matchbox, 1904
Designed by John Paul Cooper and made in his Birmingham workshop
Silver set with an agate.
3.2 x 6 x 4.2cm

Agate was one of the stones that Cooper often chose to use because its concentric markings suggested water.
The lid of this piece is decorated with the same silver mouldings that Cooper used as mounts for his shagreen-covered boxes. They were flat metal strips enriched with twisted silver wire. Clusters of rosette pins cover the joins of the strips and are also used to decorate the mount of the agate stone.
