The octagonal handles on this piece are quite unusual. The design of the stand – with its dovetailed sides, the gouging on the inner side of the feet, and its gentle curve – are typical of the Cotswold tradition.

According to Waals’s workshop record book in Gloucestershire Record Office this piece was commissioned by W A Evans and cost £27.10.0 in April 1920. Evans, who was then living in Inglewood, Leicester designed by Gimson, commissioned a considerable amount of furniture from Waals between 1920 and ’21 which helped out his workshop on a stable footing.
