Purchased from Joyce Winmill in 1959.

This oak tray was purchased from Joyce Winmill, daughter of the architect Charles Canning Winmill. Gimson and Charles had met in Bath in April 1898 where both had been sent by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings to make a report on the city’s Abbey. In a letter to Annette Carrruthers Joyce wrote:

My father, an architect, was a great friend of Phillip Webb and Ernest Gimson, and often stayed at Sapperton, invariably returning with some article of furniture, or having ordered one.
